To this end radar function should be integrated into the minimap so that all useful information is located in one place.Īs this will be a new-ish system new keybinds will be needed. In order to accommodate improved radar and weapon systems, I believe it is necessary to rework the current interface to prevent clutter and overcomplication of the system. The good news though is that SAMs and SAM armed ships came first so there is a ways to go before you can get harpooned from across the map. The downsides are: alerts enemies with direction finders, can't see through islands (current spotting systems also needs to be changed to prevent this), can't spot targets hugging islands. The advantages are thus: greater situational awareness from active spotting, faster and more precise firing solutions, can see through smoke and bad weather, high mounted masts can look over cover, ability to use long range ASMs once added. This provides a soft counter to the system which would prevent it from being too overpowered. Ships directly in front of or hiding behind islands will essentially be invisible due to scatter from the terrain and no line of sight respectively. It will also allow the future addition of long range ASMs (still a while away) as well as countermeasures to combat them.įunctionally it is identical to air search and track except that it is extremely sensitive to ground clutter (early ones at least) as it is unsurprisingly pointed down and not up. Alongside the (relatively) recent FCS change it will provide an advantage in situational awareness, targeting quality and speed to ships that have it and will act to differentiate the sometimes lesser armed modern combatants from their inter-war and wartime counterparts. Surface radar will be an important addition to the game. Type 277 surface search / air search radar
